TOPIC: Average speed cameras needed?

Average speed cameras needed? 12 Aug 2011 19:40 #3335

Following the recent spate of serious accidents on the new road to Spalding, I was wondering how others thought that safety could be improved on this road.
I think that average speed cameras could be a realistic solution.

What do you think?

Yes it needs something to slow the traffic down.

But then again I did think that building a long straight single carriage way was asking for trouble.

Some big pot holes might work just as well.

Big potholes AKA reverse speed cushions....

We all said it should have been dual carriageway otherwise you are only replicating the long straight bit of the original road that seemed to encourage drivers to take risks. We see it all the time here being right against the road. Before the new bypass we could hear traffic that had been waiting to overtake, revving up as soon as they hit this straight bit.

I know cost is an issue but if the whole idea of building a bypass to the bypass was to stop so many fatal accidents I think they have spent our money needlessly as this road is going to be just as dangerous.

I know a road can't really be dangerous but you know what I mean.

If you think things are bad now, just wait until they have re-re-re-built (is that enough re's?) the bridge footings at the dyke and open the stretch between Crowland and the A47...that stretch is going to be deadly with that long straight followed by the gentle blind bend as you approach Crowland!

Anybody who has lived or travelled around here knows that the road should have been dualled but, it is another case of money over safety. Just look at the staggered junctions at the old radar corner and the back road to Thorney....they really must have been taken straight from the Mickey Mouse book of road designs.

I don't know that the road as is can be made any safer without average speed cameras along the whole road (Gatso's won't work). It's the drivers that need to be changed rather than the road. The only (draconian) option I can think of would be to build great big concrete barriers down the center of the road (like the A47 Paston parkway) to 100% prevent any overtaking but, that would be a real pain if you got stuck behind a farm vehicle that could only do 10 or 20 mph.

Masons bridge was staggered to try and stop the accidents. Traffic lights would have been better.

It isn't the roads that is the problem it's the drivers.

The Crowland to Peterborough section of the new road is due to be opened in October (allegedly). How long before the constant rumble of HGVs causes further damage to the Car Dyke bridge and it's closed again?

Also, have you noticed how many lorries are using Nene Terrace Road, cutting the corner to reach the A47 if they are travelling east?
